firstsolar programme

Since the majority of FirstRand’s revenues are generated in countries that are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, the group is committed to facilitating the roll out of reliable and cleaner energy resources for individuals and businesses.

FirstRand has therefore created the FirstSolar Programme, which aims to help the customers of FNB and RMB reduce their use of traditional electricity by supporting the installation of small to medium scale, embedded solar power systems (less than 15MW) across South Africa. Replacing high-emission grid electricity usage through the installation of these power systems, will result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and generate carbon credits which can then be used to lower the cost of installation for participants.

The programme will make it easier for individuals and businesses to participate in the carbon market, which is expensive and has complicated requirements. FirstRand will use its resources and networks to combine and certify carbon credits from multiple solar installations – a first-of-its-kind effort for a South African bank.

FirstRand is currently seeking to register this programme with the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), a leading carbon programme managed by Verra.

Carbon credits related to this programme will be issued through VCS project 5621 for the associated greenhouse gas emission reductions for PV installations under FirstRand’s FirstSolar Programme.
