how it works

The FirstRand Volunteers Programme lends

support to community projects, and creates

valuable team-building opportunities

for employees.

Projects, such as building a home for a family, painting a nursery school classroom, planting veggie tunnels and implementing wormeries and permaculture gardens for income generation, hosting NPO/NGO Leadership Workshops, and running life skills and mentorship programmes for Grade 11 and 12 learners have boosted morale and re-energised our employees. Employees have realized skills they never knew they had such as event co-ordination, good communication skills, good people skills and good leadership skills which can be harnessed internally by the FirstRand Group.

     encouraging   partnership and engagement

Support for registered charities/beneficiaries

The FirstRand Volunteers Programme offers employees the opportunity to support their own chosen charities/schools as long as they are registered as such.

A committee of champions

The programme is managed and co-ordinated by a committee of champions. The committee is comprised of one programme manager from each major business and agrees on a strategy for the financial year ahead at a Group level. At business unit-level, these champions mobilise as many employees to participate as possible.

Annual group winter drive every year from March to June

Each year the programme launches a group initiative whereby all employees across the Group are encouraged to come together in support of a particular need. In 2011, staff raised funds to donate new pairs of school shoes to underprivileged learners. Employee donations were matched rand for rand by FirstRand, with more than R400 000 raised in total. Employees handed over 4 000 pairs of school shoes to learners across the country.

Rally to Read

The programme participates in Rally to Read annually and invitations are extended to employees across the Group to take time out over a weekend in May every year to deliver much needed teacher reading material to rural schools. Over the past two years the programme has supported rural schools in the North West Province. The programme donates over R600 000 to the Rally to Read project annually.

Volunteers calendar

The FirstRand Volunteers Programme encourages employees across the group to support national fundraising days and initiatives throughout the year. The programme incentivises teams and employees are matched accordingly. View important dates for more detailed information about the volunteer initiatives happening in 2012.
