On their toes |
Thanks to the FNB Fund the Johannesburg Dance Foundation can enrol 20
students in the demanding diploma course every year. The majority of the
students come from economically disadvantaged communities and need the
financial support.
Many of the students have excelled locally and abroad and include well-known
names like Boyzie Cekwana, Gladys Agulhas and Dimakatso Jane Sekonya.
The Foundation is in Doornfontein in Johannesburg and is the only tertiary
institution offering a three-year diploma in ballet and contemporary dance.
The Foundation also has an outreach programme where third-year students
provide a programme for learners from all over the country, stressing
the qualities necessary for success as a dancer: discipline, commitment,
and a love of the dance.
The Johannesburg Dance Foundation was constituted initially in 1986 to
raise funds for and administer the Johannesburg Dance Theatre and the
Johannesburg Dance Foundation Training Centre (founded in 1981).
